Lawrence Donald “Larry” Scholten – June 16, 1945-June 23, 2011

Lawrence Donald “Larry” Scholten, 66, Hendricks, died Thursday, June 23, 2011, at Hendricks Hospital in Hendricks.

A funeral service was Monday, June 27, at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Ivanhoe. Burial followed at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church Cemetery in Ivanhoe with full military rites presented by Ivanhoe VFW Post 2980.

Lawrence Scholten was born June 16, 1945, to John and Alieda (Lens) Scholten in Larchwood, Iowa. He graduated from St. Mary’s School in Larchwood. From 1963 to 1966 he served in the U.S. Army.

On Sept. 6, 1969, he married Sandra Hollingshead at St. Joseph’s Cathedral in Sioux Falls, S.D. The family lived in Larchwood, while he worked in Luverne for IBP. In 1978 they moved to Hardwick. He continued work at IBP and owned and operated a meat locker in Hardwick. In 1983 the family moved to Ivanhoe where he owned and operated a grocery store.

Mr. Scholten enjoyed playing cards, being on the lake in his pontoon, watching the Minnesota Twins and Vikings and WWF wrestling.

He was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, the Ivanhoe Community Club, Ivanhoe VFW Post 2980 and was a volunteer fireman in Hardwick and Ivanhoe.

Survivors include his wife, Sandra Scholten, Hendricks; three children, Don (Amber) Scholten, Ivanhoe, Jeff (Gina) Scholten, Mankato, and Kristina (Dustin) Richmond, Ivanhoe; seven grandchildren; three brothers, Clete (Shirley) Scholten, Sioux Falls, George (Donna) Scholten, Luverne, and John (Dorothy) Scholten Jr., Dell Rapids, S.D; five sisters, Ann (Ray) Burkard, Larchwood, Irene Soldatke, and Rosemary (Dale) Carmen, all of Sioux Falls, Mary Kearney, Sioux City, Iowa, and Veronica (Dick) Tuschen, Salem, S.D.; two sisters-in-law, Sharon Scholten, Waukee, Iowa, and Arliss Scholten, Sioux Falls; and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Ray, Paul and Joe Scholten; and three sisters Betty, Theresa and Dorothy.
