John B. Johnson

John B. Johnson, a veteran of the civil war and an old settler in Lyon county, died at his residence in Garfield township on January 24, 1917.

Comrade Johnson settled in Garfield among the first settlers in the county, coming here from Elkader, Iowa. The grasshopper pest then prevailing here induced him to remove to Nebraska, but after a few years there he returned to the vicinity of Elkader and then again returned to Lyon county about 20 years ago.

Born in Hanover, Germany, October 23, 1839, Mr. Johnson was reared in the Lutheran faith, emigrated to the United States in 1860, served two years in the union army, was married in 1867 to Friedericke Kohlscheck, lived for a while in Clayton county, came to Lyon county in 1905 and remained here until his death. The cause of his death was dropsy of the lungs.

Thirteen children were born to the Johnson’s. One died in infancy. The deceased man is survived by his faithful wife, six sons, six daughters, thirty-three grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

The funeral was held Saturday. The procession left the home in Garfield township about noon. Services were conducted at the German Lutheran church, South, in Rock Rapids by Rev. F. Claussen. Interment was in Riverview cemetery. The services at the grave were in charge of members of Dunlap post No 147, G.A.R.
