Man Dies in Accident
West of Doon

DOON, IOWA — One person died and another was injured in a two-vehicle accident about 5 p.m. Tuesday, June 18, 2013, at the intersection of 260th Street and Elmwood Avenue, about three miles west of Doon.

Gilbert Teunissen, 79, Inwood, died of injuries suffered in the accident. His wife, Betty, 75, remains hospitalized. They were driving a 2011 Toyota Avalon north on Elmwood, according to the Lyon County Sheriff’s Department. As they approached the 260th intersection, there was a 2001 Freightliner semitruck in the southbound lane driven by Duane Middle, 55, Rock Valley, attempting to make a left turn. Authorities reported Middle waited for another vehicle to pass through the intersection but did not see the Teunissen vehicle and started to turn in front of it. The vehicles collided in the intersection.

Gilbert Teunissen was transported to Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD, by the Sanford Health helicopter while Betty Teunissen was transported by the Lyon County Ambulance with nonincapacitating injuries. Gilbert died later at the hospital. No injuries were reported to Middle.

The Teunissens’ vehicle received about $15,000 damage. Middle’s semitruck, owned by Hartland Farms of Doon, received about $10,000 damage. Middle was cited for failure to yield upon a left turn. The Lyon County Sheriff’s Department was assisted by Doon Fire and Rescue, Sioux County Sheriff’s Department, Rock Valley Police Department, Iowa State Patrol, Lyon County Ambulance and Sanford Health helicopter.
