Henry Hopmann, age 96 of Rock Rapids, IA died Wednesday, August 27, 2008 at Lyon Manor Nursing & Rehab Center in Rock Rapids, IA.

Funeral service will be 2:00 PM Saturday, August 30, 2008 at Peace Lutheran Church in Rock Rapids, IA, with Rev. George Clausen officiating. Burial will follow at Christ Lutheran Cemetery in Alvord, IA.

Visitation will be Friday, August 29th from 3:00 – 8:00 PM, with the family present from 6:00 – 8:00 PM at the Jurrens Funeral Home of Rock Rapids.

Henry William August Hopmann was born February 1, 1912 at New York City, New York., the son of August and Anna (Winter) Hopmann. Henry was baptized March 29, 1912 in New York. At age 5 he and his family moved to Alvord, IA. He was confirmed into the Lutheran Faith on April 1, 1928 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Lakewood, IA. He lived around the Rock Rapids, IA area until entering the Air Corps serving from 1942 until his honorable discharge in 1945. He was an airplane and base inspector and received the rank of Sergeant.

On February 27, 1944, Henry married Loraine Pennington in Texas. Returning home from the Air Corps he took up his trade as a heavy machinery mechanic and welder. He spent some time in Greenland and worked in Rock Rapids at the Ford Garage, Lyon County Shop and Wally Mitchell Implement. In 1953 Henry moved to Hawarden, IA to work for Van Buskirk Construction. Henry’s wife, Loraine passed away in 1964. He was remarried on June 3, 1966 to Ruth Lienemann at Peace Lutheran Church in Rock Rapids, IA. They remained in Hawarden until moving to Sioux City, IA in 1968 when Van Buskirk Construction relocated. Henry remained with the company for over 25 years. In 1978, Henry retired. Henry and Ruth moved to Rock Rapids in 1982.

He enjoyed helping people, traveling and fishing. He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church, 64 year member of the American Legion Post No. 103, Golden Age Club and served on the advisory board for Northwest Aging Association for 10 years, delivered Dinner Date meals for over 15 years to George, IA. He was presented a volunteer award by Gov. Terry Branstad.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Ruth Hopmann of Rock Rapids, IA; many nieces and nephews; and a sister-in-law, Lois Lienemann.

He was preceded in death by parents; one brother, Arthur; two sisters, Frieda Johnson and Marian Klutman.
