John DeWit, 86, of Inwood died Friday, Jan. 9, 2004, at Fellowship Village, Inwood.

Services were Tuesday at Netherlands Reformed Church, Rock Valley, with interment in Valley View Cemetery.

Mr. DeWit was born May 7, 1917, at Alvord, the son of Bastiaan and Marigje (Van Den Toorn-Hoogendoorn) deWit. He attended grade school in Steen, Minn.

On Sept. 15, 1941, he married Jennie Van Ginkel at Dakota City, Neb. They farmed south of Rock Rapids until moving to a farm northwest of Inwood in 1949. In 1981, they retired and moved to Sioux Falls, S.D., and spent summers at Walker, Minn.

His wife died Aug. 4, 1997. He moved to Fellowship Village June 14, 1999.

Survivors include five sons, Arthur, John and Damon, all of Sioux Falls, August of Rock Rapids and Norman of Garretson, S.D.; five daughters, Mrs. David (Gladys) Stubben of Dubuque, Mrs. Douglas (Margaret) Delker of Des Moines, Mrs. Daniel (Edna) Van Sweden of Grand Rapids, Mich., Mrs. Loren (Ruth) Groeneweg of Rock Valley and Mrs. Kevin (Natalie) Spitzig of Ankeny; 31 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren and two sisters, Nellie Berg of Rock Rapids and Adrianna Van Beek of Rock Valley.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; one son, James; one granddaughter, Angela Van Sweden; one great-grandson, Jordan Leonard; one sister, Margaret Iwen, and nine Hoogendoorn half-brothers.
