Funeral services for Eugene Soat, 89, of George, formerly of Sheldon, were held Friday, December 19, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Sheldon with Fr. Robert J. Schimmer and Fr. Clair Boes officiating.

Burial was held in the St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery in Sheldon. The Vander Ploeg Funeral Home of Sheldon was in charge of the arrangements.

Eugene, the son of Ben and Christina (Sterzinger) Soat, was born on a farm near Milford on July 21, 1914. He received his education in a country school near Milford.

On November 26, 1956, he was united in marriage to Marian “Mary” Feltz in St. Patrick’s Catholic Church of Sheldon. The couple made their home in Sheldon where Eugene owned and operated the Quality Cafe for 7 years.

He drove a school bus for St. Patrick’s Catholic School and for the Sheldon Community School. He was also the caretaker for the Sheldon City Parks.

His wife preceded him in death on March 15, 1992, in Sheldon.

Eugene passed away on Tuesday, December 16, 2003, at the George Community Good Samaritan Center in George, reaching the age of 89 years, 4 months and 25 days.

He was a past member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church of Sheldon. He enjoyed being outdoors, gardening, fishing, hunting, walking and enjoyed going to Polka Festivals.

Eugene leaves to cherish his memory his 4 children, Teresa Duin and her husband, Floyd, of George; Rochelle Meendering, and her husband, Robert, of Sioux Center; Dennis Soat, and his wife Susan, of Joplin, Missouri; Kevin Soat, and his wife Nancy, of Sibley; 8 grandchildren, Heather and Stacy Soat; Nathan, Cody and Alexis Meendering; Kyle, Ryan and Troy Soat; 3 step-grandchildren, Kayla, Dustin and Anthony Duin; a brother Ray Soat, and his wife, Velva Mae of Milford; a sister, Margaret Pavelko, of Jackson, Minnesota; and a host of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; and a sister, Evelyn at the age of 29.
