Mrs. Catherine Carpenter
Dies Last Evening;
Will be Buried Here.

Word was received here this evening of the death at Kansas City, Mo., of Mrs. C. M. Carpenter, who has been in the south for the past three months in the hope of benefiting her health, which has been poor for some years past.

Death occurred at 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon. The remains will arrive in Rock Rapids tomorrow, (Friday), morning over the Rock Island, and will be accompanied by her son, Ralph Carpenter, and her three daughters, Mrs. Catherine Downer, Mrs. Alice Frier and Mrs. Florence Walker, who were at her bedside when the final summons came.

The funeral will held Saturday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock from the home in this city. Rev. C. P. Bast, pastor of the Congregational Church, of which the deceased was a long time member, will have charge of the service, and the Daughters of the American Revolution will be a part, it is expected.

BURIED SATURDAY

Had Been Resident of Rock
Rapids Many Years;
Died Wednesday

Funeral services for Mrs. Charles M. Carpenter, for 37 years a resident of this city, were held at her home in this city, Saturday afternoon. Rev. C. P. Bast, pastor of the Congregational church here, preached the funeral service, after which the remains were taken to Riverview Cemetery, where they were interred beside thos of Mr. Carpenter, who died November 27, 1912.

Mrs. Carpenter had been in ill health for the past few years, and for some time past had been in Kansas City, where she was receiving medical treatment. Her condition grew steadily worse, and she passed away on last Wednesday evening. Her son, R. T. Carpenter, of this city, and her three daughters, Florence Walker, Catherine Downer and Alice Freier were with her at the time of her death.

Catherine Osgood Carpenter was born in Volney, Oswego county, New York, November 26, 1848. When she was but a child, she moved with her parents, Luther P. and Catherine Tull Osgood to Brookfield, Illinois. There she grew to young womanhood, attending the public schools, and later the Clark Seminary, at La Salle.

On April 29, 1869, she was united in marriage with Charles Miller Carpenter. They made their home in Brookfield, until 1877, when they moved to Morris. In 1889 the came to Rock Rapids, where the family home has been ever since that time.

Mrs. Carpenter was a member of the Baptist church, and until the time of her death, rigidly adhered to its precepts. She was a great student of the bible and had committed to memory many of its passages. She took an active interest in public affairs, and was widely read. Mrs. Carpenter was endowed with a cheerful optimistic disposition and a noble Christian character. She took an interest in the life of the present day, and moved forward with her age. Much of her interest was centered in her children, and grand children, with whom she kept in constant touch.

As a member of Rose Standish chapter, D.A.R., Mrs. Carpenter took an active part in all its activities, until forced to give up, by ill health.

Mrs. Carpenter is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Susan C. O. Upton, of Long Beach, Calif., and Mrs. N. M. Armstrong, of Ottawa, Illinois, and two brothers, Henry D. Osgood, of Marsailles, Illinois, and Charles D. Osgood, of Hollywood, Calif., besides her children, all of whom were here for the funeral services. The children are: E. O. Carpenter, W. H. Carpenter, and _ T. Carpenter, all of ____; ____ence C. Walker, of Springdale, Ark., Catherine C. Downer, of Alhambra, California, and Alice C. Freier, of Cedar Falls. Mrs. Walker and Mrs. Freier were accompanied here by their husbands.

Assisting Rev. Bast, was Mrs. A. H. Lockwood, who played and sang. W. S. Cooper, George MacNab, N. Hampe, C. F. Shannon, J. W. Carey and M. G. Albright were pall bearers.
