DIED IN AN AUTOMOBILE ACCIDENT, HIT BY A TRAIN
ALVORD WOMAN KILLED IN CAR-TRAIN CRASH

Last Rites for Mrs. Huls to Be Held Saturday Collision's Impact Threw Driver From Car about 100 Feet Monday evening a death resulted in Lyon County from the collision of a car and train.

The accident occurred about 7:30 that night, just south of the Great Northern depot at Alvord. Killed in the crash was Mrs. Thomas Huls, 41, housewife, of rural route 1, Alvord, the former Alice Irene Eihnunon.

Her nephew, George Sharon, 16, was also a passenger in the car. He was hospitalized at Rock Rapids after examination by Dr. S. H. Cook, but was released that same evening, with chest bruises and scratches.

Mrs. Huls was driving east in a 1949 Mercury six-passenger coupe owned by her husband when the crash occurred. While crossing the tracks south of the depot, the back of the vehicle was hit by the engine of a 21-car train, which was traveling south.

Thrown from Car Impact from the crash forced open the door on the driver's side and threw Mrs. Huls approximately 100 feet. According to county Coroner Harold Jongewaard and Sheriff Fred Tonne, her death was instantaneous. The car was pushed across the tracks and traveled about 32 feet and down an embankment. Total damage was estimated for the vehicle.

Rites Saturday Last rites will be held Saturday afternoon at 1:30 in the home of Mr. and Mrs. George Eihausen in Rock Rapids and at 2 o'clock in Immanuel Lutheran Church, Rev. G. D. A. Engelhardt will conduct the services with Lockwood Funeral Home in charge. Burial is to be in the local cemetery.

Mrs. Thomas Huls (Alice Irene Eihausen) daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Eihausen, was born January 21, 1912 in Liberal Township near Edna. She attended rural school in Lyon County and graduated from Rock Rapids High School. She attended Westmar College at LeMars and later taught for nine years.

December 19, 1941 she was married to Thomas Huls. For about two years the couple made their home near Enid, Oklahoma. Two children were born to the couple, Arlyn, 10, and Joan Enid, 6.

Survivors are her husband, son and daughter, parents, four sisters, Kathryn (Mrs. Dalbert Newborg of Larchwood, Bertha (Mrs. Weatherbee) of Doon, Rose Mary( Mrs. Kenneth Borman) and Phyllis of Rock Rapids, and two brothers, Marvin Eihausen of Rock Rapids and Albert Eihausen of Milford.

Rites Held Here Saturday for Mrs. Thomas Huls

Last rites for Mrs. Thomas Huls were held Saturday afternoon at the home of Mr. and Mrs. George Eihausen and at Immanuel Lutheran church. Rev. G. D. A. Engelhardt conducted the services, with Lockwood Funeral home in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Huls died instantly when her car and the Great Northern train collided at Alvord the evening of December 14.

Special music during the service was provided by Mrs. G. D. A. Engelhardt, who sang a solo, and by a quartet composed of E. G. Dieter, Loren Gricose, Mrs. H. J. Paulsen and Mrs. Don Schnepf. Mrs. Richard Eder accompanied the vocalists.

Alice Irene Eihausen was born January 21, 1912 in Liberal township. She attended rural school in the county and graduated from Rock Rapids High school.

After attending Westmar College, she taught nine years. December 19, 1941, she was married to Thomas Huls. Two children Arlyne and Joan Enid were born to the couple. They made their home near Enid, Okla., for two years and later moved to a farm near Alvord.

Survivors include her husband and children, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Eihausen of Rock Rapids, four sisters and two brothers.

Burial was in Riverview cemetery in Rock Rapids.
