Obituary:

Doon, Iowa - Harlan Van Engen, 68, of Doon, died Friday, March 7, 2008 at the Sioux Center Community Hospital after a seven year battle with leukemia. Funeral Service will be 10:30 a.m., Tuesday at Doon Protestant Reformed Church. Burial at Hillside Cemetery, Doon. Rev. David Overway officiating. Visitation will be Monday with the family present 6:30-8 p.m. at Porter Funeral Home of Rock Valley.

Harlan Eugene Van Engen was born on March 14, 1939 at Doon, Iowa, son of Henry and Inez (Faber) Van Engen. He first worked for Lems Auto Recyclers at Doon before attending a transmission school.

Harlan married Jeanette Van Otterloo on October 2, 1959 at Rock Valley. Together they lived at Doon where Harlan owned and operated Van's Automotive. Harlan also was active as a School Board member and a Consistory and Men's Society member. He retired from his business in 2001 due to leukemia and for the last seven years he enjoyed the hobby of woodworking and sharing this talent with his grandchildren. He played piano and one of his greatest joys was singing with family and friends.

Harlan is survived by his wife of 48 years, Jeanette; sons, Randy (Rosetta) Van Engen of Doon and Brian (Stephanie) Van Engen of Hull, Iowa; daughter, Lorelei (Dennis) Burgers of Hull; 15 grandchildren, Gwen (Brian) Denekas, Mitch, and Taylor Van Engen, Danielle, Larissa, Dana, and Derk Burgers, Luke, Zachary, Jacob, Marcus, Ashley, Brooke, Heather, and Nicolas Van Engen; great-grandson, Carson Denekas; brother, Marlin Van Engen of Doon; sisters: Greta (Raymond) Hilt of Canton, South Dakota, Wilma Nielsen of Dexter, Iowa, Carolyn (Dennis) Wilson of Redfield, Iowa, Marcia (Gerald) Van Voorst and Linda (Richard) Haan all of Sioux Center, Iowa.

Harlan was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Inez Van Engen.
