Bernard "Bernie" Niemeyer was born October 2, 1956 at Canton, South Dakota, son of Oepke and Henrietta (Zomermaand) Niemeyer. He graduated from West Lyon High School in 1975.

Bernie married Marlene "Marty" Ver Hoeven on June 8, 1979. They shared almost 29 years together. During their years together, they enjoyed traveling and most recently shared a fall trip to the East coast.

Bernie and Marty lived SE of Inwood where Bernie was first a dairy farmer. Together they had three beautiful children, Todd, Sheri, and Jeris. He was always proud of his children and their accomplishments as they grew. Bernie's family continued to grow with the marriage of Todd to Martina and the birth of his three grandchildren, Audriana, Evan, and Lillian. He loved spending time with his grandkids.

In 1985, Bernie and Marty started Mama's Greenhouse and had 23 successful seasons working together as a "team." Bernie greatly enjoyed selling his flowers to people especially his last years working the retail greenhouse in Orange City.

In 1997, Bernie started working for Tri-State Security first in Canton and then in 2000 at the Washington Pavilion in Sioux Falls. He loved his job and being able to help others. He was seen as a father figure to many people other than his children and gained a second "family" working at the Washington Pavilion. He was always quick to give what he could to others and take them under his wing. He was known for his big, caring heart and "tough" love. Bernie continued to give even after death and was an organ donor so that others could live on after him.

Bernie died Thursday, June 5th of 2008 at Sanford Medical Center, Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He was 51 years of age.

Bernie is survived by his wife, Marty; three children, Todd (Martina) Niemeyer, Sheri Niemeyer and her special friend, James Abbott, and Jeris Niemeyer; grandchildren Audriana, Evan, and Lillian Niemeyer; Parents, Oepke and Henrietta Niemeyer; brothers, Gerrit (Pat) Niemeyer, Edwin (Marilyn) Niemeyer, and Harrold (Lorraine) Niemeyer.

Bernie was preceded in death by his sister, Johanna "Joann" Jacobsma.
