Obituary:

Doon, Iowa - Gerrit Niemeyer, 84, died Sunday, May 24, 2009 at Sanford Rock Rapids Hospital. Funeral Service will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday at First Reformed Church, Doon. Burial at Hillside Cemetery, Doon. Rev. Don Baker will be officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday with the family present 6-8 pm at Porter Funeral Home, Rock Valley.

Gerrit was born February 17, 1925 near Montpelier, North Dakota, son of Walter and Hendrika (Van Grootheest) Niemeyer. The family lived near Inwood and in 1940 by Doon. Gerrit married Helene DeBruin on November 29, 1950 at Rock Valley. Gerrit served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War 1951-2. He then farmed in the Doon area until his retirement into Doon in 1981.

Besides farming, Gerrit enjoyed polishing and maintaining his vehicles; taking care of the yard; but most important, was his family and church.

Grateful for having shared his life is his wife, Helene; six children: Glenda (Brian) Hellenga of Little Rock, Iowa, Judy (Carl) Jansma of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Harlan (Marilyn) Niemeyer of Doon, Ardell (Colleen) Niemeyer of Boyden, Iowa, Donna (Wendell) Rensink of Elbow Lake, Minnesota, Lisa (Roger) DeBey of Rock Rapids; 17 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; brother, Henry (Samantha) Niemeyer of George, Iowa; sisters: Grace (Bill) Keizer, Theo (Dick) Keizer all of Doon.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Hendrika; brother and his wife, William and Hester Niemeyer.
