George, Iowa -- Ronald J. Korthals, age 72, of George, died unexpectedly on Friday, November 23, 2012 at Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Funeral service will be 10:30 AM, Monday, November 26th at Hope Reformed Church in George, with Rev. David Poppen, officiating.

Burial will follow at Hope Reformed Cemetery at George, Iowa.

Visitation will be Sunday, November 25th from 2:00 to 8:00 PM, with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Jurrens Funeral Home, George.

George, Iowa -- Ronald J. Korthals age 72 of George, died unexpectedly Friday, November 23, 2012 at Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Ronald James Korthals was born April 6, 1940 at family farm southwest of George, Iowa, the son of Garrit and Ida (DeWeerd) Korthals. He attended country school and helped with the duties of the farm. As a young man he worked at Bruns Motor in the parts department.

Ron was united in marriage to Floy Hengeveld on December 8, 1961 at the Christian Reformed Church in Hills, Minnesota. They lived in George for a short while before moving to Sanborn, Iowa, where he worked at Vander Haag Salvage. In 1969 they moved back to the George area and farmed and sold Ag equipment for several years. In 1992 they moved off the farm into George where he continued in sales.

Ron was a member of Hope Reformed Church, serving as Elder, Sunday school and Catechism teacher. He was a member of the Lyon County Pork Producers and served as a 4-H Leader. He enjoyed tinkering in his shed, fishing and camping with his family. Most of all he enjoyed following his children and grandchildren school events.

On Tuesday, November 20th Ron suffered from a broken leg and was hospitalized at Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD. While there he suffered heart complications, and died this past Friday, November 23, 2012 at the age of 72.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Floy Korthals of George, Iowa; four children, Rodney (wife Jean) Korthals, their children, Scott and Brian, all of Bourbonnais, Illinois, Joel (wife Georgette) Korthals, their children, Brooke, Bret, Brentt and Brecklynn, all of Sibley, Iowa, Melissa (husband Larry) DeBoer, their children, Kalie, Jayden and Kendra, all of Sibley, and Paul (wife Tara) Korthals, their children, Simon, Thor, all of Ocheyedan, Iowa; five brothers: John (wife Mary) Korthals, Alfred Korthals, Ed (wife Pearl) Korthals, Harold (wife Ardis) Korthals, and Albert (wife Johanna) Korthals, all of George; two sisters, Henrietta Krull and Edith Van Tilburg of George; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Gerrit and Ida Korthals; two infant siblings; two sisters, Jeanette Lamfers and Leona Geerdes; and one brother, Marion Korthals.
