William Van Sloten, 86, of Rock Rapids died Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2003, at Lyon Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Rock Rapids.

Services were Saturday at Faith Baptist Church, Rock Rapids, with interment in Riverview Cemetery.

Mr. Van Sloten was born March 13, 1917, at Alvord, the son of Lambert and Jenna (Humme) Van Sloten. When he was 2, the family moved to Hull where he attended Hull Community School.
On Sept. 10, 1954, he married Claretta Kruse at Nashua. They lived in Rock Rapids where he worked on area farms and later worked for the Lyon County bridge crew. For several years, he also managed the Lyon County Landfill, retiring in 1982. He became a resident of Lyon Manor Oct. 3, 2003.

Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Mrs. Steve (Kim) Samuelson of Oakdale, Minn.; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild and two sisters, Coba Slager of Hull and Jen Jansma of Rock Rapids.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Mary Winger; an infant brother and four sisters, Dena Veldkamp, Harriet DeHaan, Mina Schaapp and Ann DeBoer.
