Death of David Freer.

Rock Rapids Reporter: Another old soldier answered the last call Tuesday when David Frear passed from this life. Mr. Frear has been in ill health for several weeks and his death was not unexpected though his condition had so improved of late that it was thought he might recover.

Acute dysentery bad so weakened him, however, that his strength was entirely exhausted and when the summons came, be was unable to rally. Deceased was born in Wyoming county, Pennsylvania, in 1834.

He enlisted in the Union army in 1861 at the age of twenty-seven, but was discharged from service shortly thereafter because of sickness. He re-enlisted in Co- C 5th Penn. cavalry on February 24, 1862 and served his country until the close of the war, receiving an honorable discharge August 7th 186__ (several lines are not legible) with eight children all living in this vicinity, survive him.

Mr. Frear was a quiet, industrious citizen and had borne heavily on him in recent years, he made every provide for his family and meet the world with a brave front.

He was an active worker in G. A.R. circles and will be sadly missed in the post of which be was an exemplary member.

Funeral services will be from the Congregational church this afternoon and members of Dunlap post will attend in a body, showing proper respect and love for one who was to them as a brother. At the cemetery the G. A. R. will have charge of ceremonies and will carefully lay away the remains of a good, upright and honored citizen when all that is mortal of David Frear is consigned to the earth.

In the 1885 census of Garfield Lyon County, Iowa-- David Frear was 40 yrs, born in PA, his wife Alice was 28 , children were Addie 9, Andrew 3, George W. 1.

Found that he is buried in Riverview Cemetery at Rock Rapids as D. J. Frear no dates Block 07, Lot 04, space 05 G. A. R.

In the 1900 census of Rock Tsp. Lyon county IA Alice I. Frear was 42 years born Ill. She was a widow, mother of eight children with seven living at the time. The children were – George W. 15, Jennie J. 13, Sylvia A. 12, Trilla b. 10, Wilber W. 3, and Eugene 1.

In the 1925 census his son George W. Frear born abt 1885 Iowa, was living in Webster Co. Iowa and listed his parents as David Frear born PA, and mother as Alice Claflin

Next found the family on ancestry.com (work done by others) David Frear born 1844 in Wyoming Pennsylvania. (The death date is apparently wrong on this account as 1924 in PA.) He died September of 1899 at Rock Rapids Iowa. According to this report his parents were Isaac Frear and Euphenia Luce , he married Alice Isadore Claflin 1874 in Rock Valley Iowa Children born to them were – Addie Helen 1875, Almond E. 1879-1880, Jay Warren 1891, George Washington 1883, Jennie Jane 1885, Sylvia Ann 1877, Trilla Bell 1889, Wilbur Miles 1896 and Eugene Jessie 1899-1982
