Irene Kelly, 96, of Franklin, Tenn., died Saturday, Sept. 30, 2000, at Williamson Medical Center, Franklin.

Funeral mass was Thursday at Holy Name Catholic Church, Rock Rapids, with interment in the church cemetery.

Irene Nugent was born Jan. 22, 1904, at Everly, the daughter of George and Magdalina (Kapka) Nugent. She grew up in Everly and graduated from Everly High School. She received her teaching certificate from Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls and taught at Larchwood and Rock Rapids public schools.

On Oct. 11, 1927, she married Clarence Kelly in Royal. They lived in Rock Rapids. She was active in her career as an elementary teacher in Iowa and Minnesota several years.

Her husband died in 1964. She moved to California in 1965 and to Franklin in 1990.

While living in Rock Rapids, she was a member of the Women's Club on local and state levels, served as president of the public library board several years and was a member of Holy Name women's group.

Survivors include two sons, Jerrold of Austin Texas, and George "Pat" of Mexico City; two daughters, Mrs. Faust (Jane) Capobiarico of Franklin and Mrs. Ed (Karen) Gilliland of Bend, Ore.; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Mariel.
