Gifford Berkland of rural Inwood died Thursday in Kansas
A prominent Lyon countian from the Inwood area died Thursday evening in Concordia, Kansas. He is Gifford Berkland, 70, a life-time resident of Lyon county. Berkland and his wife had been vacationing in Texas and Arizona and were on their way home when he had an apparent stroke in Kansas. He was hospitalized at St. Joseph's hospital in Concordia for three days before his death.
Funeral services were held today (Monday) at Our Savior's Lutheran church of rural Inwood with the Rev. Conrad E. Rolland officiating. Special music was provided by soloist Leslie Severson and a hymn was also sung by the congregation. Organist for the services was Marie Medalen.
Burial was in the church cemetery under the direction of the Porter Funeral home of Inwood. Bearers were Gary Mydland, Omar Severson, Russel Twedt, Donald Doherty, Lloyd Anderson, and Oliver Anderson.
Gifford Berkland was born at Inwood January 18, 1899, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Berkland. He married Muriel Hotvet June 2, 1946 and the couple made their home on Berkland's farm northwest of Inwood.
Berkland was well known in the area and although he continued to live on his farm, he was retired from the farming operation. He was a seed corn dealer in his area for many years. His family was one of a group of Inwood area families who last summer observed the 100th anniversary of their ancestors settling in Lyon county.
Survivors are his wife; two daughters: Joan Berkland of Fort Worth, Tex., and Jean, Mrs. Dennis Henrichs of Luverne. Minn.: five sisters: Elma Berkland of Inwood; Mrs. Geneva Roti and Alice Berkland, both of Canton; Mrs. Trygve Vegge of Luverne; and Florence Berkland of Minneapolis; two brothers: Lawrence and Marvin, both of Inwood.
