Van Dyke, Sievert

Funeral services for Sievert Van Dyke, 89, of Little Rock, were held on Friday, July 4, at the First Presbyterian Church in Little Rock with Rev. Kenneth MacLeod officiating. Interment was held at the Pleasant View Cemetery in Little Rock. The Walton-Roste Funeral Home of Sibley was in charge of the arrangements.

Sievert was born on February 13, 1914, in Nobles County, Minnesota the son of Jasper and Geertji (Dammer) Van Dyke. His parents died when he was seven years old. He was raised by his grandparents Sievert and Gerdina Dammer in Ellsworth, MN, until he was fourteen. Sievert worked for area farmers for room and board until he married.

On March 12, 1936, Sievert was united in marriage to Genevieve (Clark). Sievert and Genevieve farmed in the Rushmore and Little Rock areas. During his life he drove livestock, grain truck and gas truck. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Little Rock, where he served on the church board and was treasurer for several years. He was on the town council and was the mayor in Little Rock and also a member of the Town and Country Club. Sievert better known as “Sam” was school janitor and retired in 1977. Sievert enjoyed his hobby in the “fix it shop” in the basement of his home. In 1975, Sievert’s wife, Genevieve died and a couple of years later he married Evelyn (Miller) on May 7, 1977. Sievert was a resident at Country View Manor Nursing Home for six years. He died this past Wednesday morning, July 2, 2003, at the Osceola Community Hospital in Sibley at the age of eighty-nine.

Sievert is survived by two daughters, Geri Harms and her husband Gene and Myrna Willemssen all of Little Rock. One step-daughter, Karen Lawrence and her husband of Adrian, MN; one step-son, Glenn Miller and his wife, Donna of Round Lake, MN; one step-son, Glenn Miller and his wife, Donna of Round Lake, MN; along with seven grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren, four step-grandchildren; three sisters, Jennie Venenga; Gerdina Rachuy; and Grace Larson all in Sibley Nursing and Rehab Center in Sibley.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jasper and Geertji; his wife, Genevieve in 1975; and his second wife Evelyn in 1997; one sister, Marie; one son-in-law, Gordon; and three great grandchildren, Taylor, Nicholas and Nate Willemssen.
