HEINKENS, EILDERS, MATLOCK, RIFE, GEERDES, SLUIJER

Funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon of this week from the Lyon County First Presbyterian church for Mrs. Wupke Heinkens, a resident of this community for many years, who passed away in her home in George on Thursday, August 3. Rev. Henry Bovendam, assisted by Rev. Myron Brower, were in charge of the services, which were arranged by the Vogelaar Funeral Services of George.

Mrs Wupke Heinkens, nee Eilders, was born in Wijmeer, Osfresland, Germany, March 20, 1868, and passed away August 3, 1950, at 1:45 a.m. She was 82 years, 4 months and 14 days.

At the age of 14 years, she came to America with her parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Harm Eilders and 8 brothers and sisters. In 1884 they settled near Florence, Ill., where on sister passed away. Two years later, the family moved west, settling in Lyon County on a farm 6 miles southeast of George.

On December 9, 1886, she was united in marriage to Abbe Heikens. They started farming where Matlock is now located. Two years later the railroad was put through, then they moved 1 mile west, where they lived for 28 years.

In March, 1918, the retired and moved to Rock Rapids, they resided there 12 years. There is where her husband passed away, in December, 1928.

After his death she spent some time with her sons in Montana. Later she moved to George for 5 years. Then she went to Long Beach, Calif., and lived with her daughter for some time. In 1940 she settled down in her home in George.

The last few years the winter months were spent south in a warmer climate with her daughter, Mrs. Rife. The deceased was a charter member of the Matlock Baptist church. There were 11 children born to this union: Mrs. Jennie (John) Matlock; Mrs. Emma Geerdes, George; Weert, French Camp, Calif.; Harm, Nashua, Mont.; Mrs. Sina (Ed) Sluijer, deceased; John, Bigfork, Mont.; Ollie and Mike, Nashua, Mont.; Mrs. Minnie (Don) Rife, Arlington, Va.; Harry, French Camp, Calif; and Fred, Nashua, Montana. There are 24 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. She was the last one of her family to pass away.
