This community lost one of its very highly respected long-time residents in the death of John P. Blum on Saturday of last week. Mr. Blum had been in poor health for the past two years.
Funeral services were held on Friday afternoon from his home and the Lutheran church in George. Internment was after at the Evergreen Lawn cemetery here.
Johann Peter Blum son of Mr. and Mrs. John Blum, was born January 5, 1865, in Germany. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He came to this country at about the age of eighteen and first settled in Peoria, Ill., where he worked as a farm hand. Later he settled in the vicinity of George and took up farming.
In 1894, he was married to Ann Marie Runge. Nine children were born to this union. They are: Margaret Eder, of Rock Rapids; Carol of Luverne; Herman, of George; Amelia Janssen, of Glenwood, Minn.; Walter, of Rock Rapids; Philip, of Rock Rapids; Lilli, who passed away November 10, 1919; Louise Harms of George; and Lena Harms, of George; 22 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren mourn him in death on March 9, 1936, also one grandchild.
He remarried in April, 1940 to Mrs. Katherine Garf, of Rock Rapids, and retired to Rock Rapids at that time. She died in November of the same year, after which he spent some time with his son, Herman and the retired from the farm about six years ago. He enjoyed good health all of his life up to the last two years. He was always regular in church attendance and in the ? of the holy sacraments. He received communion a few days before his death. John passed away Saturday, July 8 at about 5:00 a.m., at the Rock Rapids hospital. He attained the age 85 years, 8 months, and 3 days.
