H. C. Richters Dies Following Brief Illness

Came Here From Germany About 50 Years Ago

Henry Claus Richters, died at 7 p.m. Monday in Rock Rapids Hospital after a brief illness due to cancer. His condition became serious a short time before his death. A long-time resident of Lyon County and the surrounding vicinity. Mr. Richters had made his home in the town of Rock Rapids since February, 1948.

He was born on August 21, 1877, in Krummedeich, a province of Hanover, Germany, the son of Metta Rettman and Claus Richters. He attended grammer school there and received instruction in the Lutheran faith. At the age of 19 he was called to serve in the German army as a member of the cavalry unit from 1897 to 1900.

Came to U.S. in 1908

After being employed in Hamburg, Germany, in 1903 he came to the United States, arriving in New York in April. Several years later he left New York to come to Lyon county where he worked on a farm near George and later farmed with his brother on a farm south of Rock Rapids. In 1920 he moved to a farm near Ellsworth, Minn.

He was married on June 30, 1926, to Josephine Raabe, and one child was born to the union. Mrs. Richters died on January 6, 1946.

Mr. Richters was a charter member of the Immanuel Lutheran Brotherhood and a member of the church.

Funeral Services

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. today (Thursday) at the home and at 2 p.m. at the Immanual Lutheran church. The Reb. G. D. A.Engelhardt will officiate. Burial will be at the Riverview cemetery and the Lockwood Funeral home will be in charge of the arrangements.

Pallbears will be Henry Bolte, H. B. Reyelts, August Reyelts, John Fick, William Anders and W. P. Moeller.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Garrit Jongerius, Jr. of Rock Rapids; a step-son, Lyle Raabe of Holstein; a sister, Mrs. Katie Lotter of New York; and two grandsons. He was preceded in death by his wife, two sisters and two brothers.
