Funeral services for the late Mrs. Maria Ryan, who died at her home on Sunday afternoon, December 31, 1916were held Friday at 10 a.m. at the Holy Name church. Rev. Father Dullard officiated. Internment was in the Holy Name cemetery.

Mrs Ryan had been a resident of Rock Rapids for the past several years. She was one of the well known and highly respected residents of this section and the news of her passing came as a shock to her many friends. She had been ill for many weeks and although she suffered greatly during her illness she bore her sufferings with patience and fortitude of a true Christian character. Always a kind and loving wife and mother, she was one of those exceptional characters who make the world better by the splendid lives they live.

Mrs. Ryans maiden name was Maria Kelly. She was born in County Longford, Ireland, eighty four years ago and came to America when a young girl. She resided for a time in New York and then came west. She was married at Freeport, Ill., to Patrick Ryan, who passed away eleven years ago. For many years Mr. Ryan was connected with the Illinois Central railroad company in the capacity of roadmaster, and the family resided successively at Freeport, Nora and Galena in Illinois. They came to Rock Rapids sixteen years ago and it was in this city that Mr. Ryan passed away. Mrs. Ryan was the daughter of Mrs. Margaret Kelly, who died several years ago in Carroll, Iowa, at the age of 108 years.

Nine children were born to Mrs. Ryan. One, Miss Lizzie Ryan, passed away in Rock Rapids 14 years ago, and one in infancy. The children who survive her are as follows: Miss Harriett Ryan and Miss Margaret Ryan, Rock Rapids; Mrs. Mary R. Grant, Freeport, Ill.; Mrs. Theresa Galbraith, Elizabeth, Ill.; Mrs. Kate R. Taylor, Chicago, Ill.; Mrs. Thos. A. Dean, Casper, Wyo.; John K. Ryan, San Francisco, Cal. Several grandchildren and great grandchildren also survive.
