From the home of his brother, George W. Schmidt, about two miles northeast of George, occurred the funeral of John Schmidt, or Orient, Iowa, on Thursday afternoon, August 4, 1938. The body had been brought here from the family home in the southwestern part of the state the day before, accompanied by Mrs. Schmidt and the children.

The deceased was born May 12, 1872 in Cichelboe, near Goeden, Germany. In 1880, Mrs. And Mrs. Weert Schmidt, his parents, brought the family to this country, making Buck Grove, near Parkersburg, Iowa, their new home. In 1898 they moved to Pipestone, Minnesota, but in the fall of the same year they came back to Iowa and settled on a farm one mile east of George. John remained at home until 1900 when he was united in marriage to Miss Carrie Konfe. Two children, William and Grace. were born to this union. Beside these, 3 orphaned children were reared in the Schmidt home. Thse are; Henry Miller, now of Sioux City, Robert Gilberger, of Vermillion, South Dakota and Elsie Hine, of Madison, South Dakota.

In 1916 the John Schmidt famly acquired a farm near Madison, South Dakota and moved there, having disposed of their farm near George. In 1935 they moved to a place near Orient, Iowa, which they are now occupying.

In 1898, Mr. Schmidt was converted and joined the First Baptist Church of George, being baptized by the Rev. H. Dallmann. At the time of his death he held his membership with the Baptist church at Creston, Iowa.

After a lingering illness of heart affliction, the diseased passed away on Sunday evening, July 31, 1938, at the age of 66 years, 2 months and 19 days.

Funeral services were held at the First Baptist church, Rev. C. Swyter in charge. Rev. J. Jordan and Rev. Harm Johnson took part in the services. Interment was made in the cemetery adjoining the church.

Besides his wife and children, the deceased is survived by one brother, George W. of George, Iowa and one syster, Mrs. Bunger of Redfield, South Dakota.
