Obituary: Rock Valley, Iowa: Henry E. Van Maanen, 77, of Rock Valley, died Wednesday, May 13, 2009 in Orange City, Iowa. Memorial Service was held Monday, May 18 at Calvin Christian Reformed Church, Rock Valley with burial prior at Valley View Cemetery.

Henry E. Van Maanen was born November 10, 1931 on the family farm near Doon, Iowa, son of Edward and Hattie (DeVries) Van Maanen. He attended Rock Valley Christian School and Western Academy. He served in the U.S. Army from 1952 - 1954. Henry married Anita Ykema on November 17, 1954. He worked for Driesen Implement, Skelly Gas and was a Surge Equipment Dealer before starting Van Maanen Electric in March of 1962 which later became Van Maanen’s Radio Shack located in Rock Valley, Sheldon and Orange City, Iowa.

Henry was an active member of Calvin Christian Reformed Church, Rock Valley serving as an elder and deacon. He served on the Rock Valley Christian School Board and was a strong advocate for Christian Education. Henry served on the Hegg Memorial Hospital Board and Mid-America Reformed Seminary Board. The family was blessed by having Henry as a caring, Christian husband, father, grandpa and great-grandpa. Being with his family, woodworking, fishing and reading were his enjoyment. Above all, he confessed Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and in his life he bore witness to the hope which is in Jesus Christ, to the Glory of God.

Henry is survived by his wife, Anita; children: Korrie (Sarita) Van Maanen of Rock Valley; Alan (Deb) Van Maanen of Sheldon; Peggy Van Maanen of Hull, Galen (Marlene) Van Maanen of Rock Valley, Curt Van Maanen of Rock Valley and Amy (Dale) Vander Berg of Sioux Center, IA; 13 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; brother, John (Ruth) Van Maanen of Rock Valley; sisters: Wilmina (Hubert) Landegent and Henrietta Vanden Bosch all of Rock Valley; brothers-in-law: Tony (Wanda) Ykema of Arizona, Lawrence Ykema of South Dakota, Melvin Ykema and Norman (Evelyn) Ykema all of Minnesota; sisters-in-law: Hermina Ykema, Joyce (John) Feenstra and Madelyn Wallinga all of Michigan.

He was preceded in death by his two brothers and sisters-in-law: Gerrit and Berdena Van Maanen and Jim and Elda Van Maanen; brothers-in-law, Art Vanden Bosch, August Ykema, Bernard Ykema and Paul Wallinga; sisters-in-law: Lois Ykema and Wilmina Ykema.
