Verna Freed, 94, of Rock Rapids died Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2002, at Lyon Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Services were Thursday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Rock Rapids, with interment in Hillside Cemetery, Lester.

Verna Zornig was born Dec. 15, 1908, near Rock Rapids, the daughter of William and Ella (Dickman) Zornig. After graduating from high school, she taught country school before going to Des Moines to become a hairdresser. She then began working in a beauty shop in Rock Rapids.
After her marriage to Walter Freed, they moved to Sioux City. They returned to Rock Rapids and opened a beauty shop. In 1942, they moved and started a farm near Lester.

Her husband died in 1946. She moved back to Rock Rapids and opened a beauty shop in her home. She became a resident of Lyon Manor in 1992.
She was a member of VFW Auxiliary and received a 60-year service award from the National Hairdressers Association.

Survivors include one son, Darryl of Rancho Murrieta, Calif.; one daughter, Mrs. Henry (Yvonne) Thomas of Rock Rapids; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson and one brother, Marvin of Rock Rapids.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
