Funeral services for Carl "Butch" Campbell, age 84, of Lester, Lyon county, Iowa, are pending with Jongewaard-Roste Funeral Home of Rock Rapids. Campbell was a long-time Lester merchant. He died on Tuesday evening at Merrill Pioneer Community Hospital.

Funeral services for Carl "Butch" Campbell, 84, of Lester were held on Friday morning at the United Methodist church there, with Rev. Melecio Valdez officiating. Burial was in Hillside cemetery at Lester under the direction of Jongewaard-Roste Funeral Home of Rock Rapids.

He died on Tuesday, April 14, 1981, at Merrill Pioneer Community hospital in Rock Rapids, Lyon county, Iowa.

Campbell was born on February 20, 1897 in Makanda, Illinois, to Stephen and Lottie Dresser Campbell. When he was a child his mother married Henry A. Wick and they lived in Lester. Following graduation from the high school there in 1914, Campbell enlisted in the U.S. Army where he was a company bugler. Upon his return to Lester he played taps at the Memorial Day celebrations there for many years.

After residing inWilmont, Minnesota, and Mankato, Minnesota, he began operating the Wick and Campbell store in Lester in 1938. On March 14, 1948 he married Leota C. Schwenck in Lester. She died in 1972.

Campbell was a 60-year member of the Edward Bouwman Post 683 of the American Legion, in Lester. In 1979, he was honored by Lester residents who declared a "Butch Campbell Day."

Survivors include Earl Schwenck, Sioux Falls, S.D.; Mrs. Otto (Maurine) Haegele, Lester; Mrs. Helen Bruzer and Mrs. Roscoe (Nadene) Pettengill, both of Rock Rapids; Harold Wick, Phoenix, Arizona; Mrs. Robert (Lois) Barnett, Mankato, Minnesota, and their children.
