This community of George, Lyon county, Iowa was cast into mourning when word reached the residents that death claimed Mr. Frederick Van Briesen who resided northwest of town.

Mr. Van Briesen was born in Fisquad, East Friesland Germany on July 12, 1874. His childhood days and early youth were spent in the land of his birth, where he attended the public school and received his religious instruction according to the creed of the Reformed faith.

In the year 1891 he left the old country and came to America, arriving in George on April 6th of that year. The first years he engaged in form labor, acquainting himself with agriculture activities. On March 11, 1901 he was united in marriage with Coba Christians. They took to farming and spent their entire life in this enterprise. His marriage was the origin of 7 children of whom one died in tender infancy.

Mr.Van Briesen always enjoyed good health until several years ago when he developed some physical difficulties at various times. On June 25 he complained that he felt rather indisposed. The family physician was call in. Later, a nurse was also called in. In spite of professional care his condition grew more serious until death claimed him on July 5, 1938 at 11:00 PM attaining the age of 63 years 11 months and 23 days.

He leaves to mourn his departure his wife, three sons, Jake of George, Lyon county, Iowa, Fred of Little Rock, Lyon county, Iowa and Ed, residing in the parental home; three daughters, Mrs. Hattie Aeilts of Rock Rapids, Lyon county, Iowa, Mrs. Frieda Gruis and Mrs. Esther Peters, both of George. Furthermore, he leaves eight grandchildren and six brothers: Ben of Lynd, Minnesota, Jacob of Cherokee, Cherokee county, Iowa, George of Chester, South Dakota; Leonard, Simon and Harry of George.

In 1909 Frederick united with the Zion Presbyterian church, six miles north of George. He served his church be being a trustee for many years.

The funeral was held on Friday, July 8, 1938 at Zion Presbyterian Church.
