Obituary for Ella Christena Kemp Carter, likely from a George, Iowa, area newspaper:

Mrs. J. W. Carter died at the New Hospital in Sioux Falls Tuesday evening, April 28, (1903) as the result of an operation for appendicitis (?) from the surgeon's knife. The remains were brought here and the funeral held yesterday from the Methodist church and was very largely attended. Mr. Ed Freerks preached a brief funeral service.

Mrs. Carter, blessed with an excellent physique, fought nobly against the malady for one week after the action taken by the doctors but at last tired nature gave away and another soul went to claim its just reward from an all-wise Father.

Mrs. Carter had many warm friends in George and vicinity and her taking away in the prime of her life comes as a severe blow to them. She was an ideal woman, a devoted wife and mother, and a warm, warm friend and neighbor. This is probably one of the saddest deaths that has occurred here for some time.

Her maiden name was Ella Kemp and was born in Cocomo [sic], Indiana, 41 years ago, from which place she moved with her parents to Wisconsin and from there here, where she has since resided. Besides a number of brothers and a mother, she leaves a husband and three children to mourn her departure- Alva, Stella, and Robert, the youngest who is fifteen years of age.
