OBITUARY Chariton Herald Patriot Thursday Oct 26, 1939 Sanford S Exley
Sanford S. Exley, son of Thomas and Cynthia Exley was born near Last Chance at the Exley homestead on March 1859 and passed away at his home on October 15, 1939 at the age of 80 years, 6 months and 19 days. He spent his entire lifetime in the Last Chance neighborhood. His father Thomas Exley came from England. There were eleven other children in the Exley family. He was preceded in death by his father and mother and eight brothers and sisters. They were Frank, Harmon, Joseph, Emma, Rebecca, Jane, Hardin, and Charles. Three sisters are living. Mrs. E.P. Leach of Sargent, Nebr., Mrs. J.W. Hines of Ree Heights, S. Dak., and Mrs. Mark Hines of Osceola, Iowa. He was united in marriage to Lucy Lugar of Chariton on November 15, 1883 who preceded him in death on May 28, 1928. To this union seven children were born, two of whom Hollie V., and a daughter Flossie Fuller, preceded him to the Great Beyond. The five living are James Clarence Exley and Claude Sanford Exley of Derby; Lois Eleanor Sayers of Melba, Idaho; Hazel Thelma Tull of Meridian, Idaho. Mr. Exley was again married on April 11, 1933 at Chariton to Nancy Z. Bevard, who survives him. He was united with the Last Chance church about thirty years ago, during the ministry of Rev. Snodgrass. He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, three sons, two daughters, 28 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, three sisters and many other relatives, neighbors and friends. Funeral services conducted by Rev. Floyd A Smith of Humeston were held at the Last Chance church Wednesday afternoon at two o’clock. Singers were Mrs. Dave Johnson, Mrs. Victor Anderson, Mrs. Roy Newsome, Mrs. Joe Robison, Carey Davis, James Newsome, Roy Newsome, and Dell Airy with Mrs. Ferman Bevard at the piano. Pall bearers were Weaver Exley, Joe Exley, Roy Hitt, John Exley, Ferman Bevard and Tilman Roberts. Burial was in the Last Chance Cemetery.
