The Chariton Leader, Chariton, Iowa
Thursday, March 12, 1908

As announced in our last issue DALE SCOTT passed away at the hospital at
Sheridan, Wyoming, on Wednesday of last week, after an illness of fifteen
days. The dread disease pneumonia was the direct cause of death.

DALE WINFIELD SCOTT, second son of MR. and MRS. J.H. SCOTT, was born in
Lucas County, Iowa, August 14th, 1885, and came to this county with his
parents in 1888 when three years of age. He attended school and grew to
manhood on his father's farms north of Leoti where he made many friends
among his acquaintances. During the past two or three years DALE had been
working away from home a part of the time, his older brother CHARLEY and
father being able to keep up the work on the farm. Last September he left
for Wyoming where he secured employment as brakeman on the C.B. & Q.,
running from Gillette, Wyoming to Edgemount, S.D. He liked the work pretty
well but during the last two months was planning to return home with his
savings and go on the farm.

During his last sickness he was in the hospital nine days before his parents
were notified, as it was not believed that his illness would prove serious,
however later he began to get quite low and a week ago Sunday a message came
stating that he was not expected to live. CHARLEY, his older brother, left
that night for Wyoming, and upon arriving there on Tuesday following he
wired his mother that DALE had passed the dangerous point and that the
chances for his recovery were good. DALE talked some to his brother of his
getting well and returning home. He soon began to get weaker, however, and
on Wednesday, March 4, 1908, he passed away.

The remains were brought to Leoti and taken to the family home, last Friday
evening.

The funeral was held at the Methodist church Saturday afternoon and the
impressive services conducted by Revs. C.W. Whorrall and R.W. Hodson. The
church was filled to overflowing by friends of the family, who afterwards
followed the remains to the Leoti Cemetery where the last sad rites were
said of him who was a mother's cherished son.

FRANK SCOTT, of Rice county, LLOYD SCOTT, of Hoisington, and MRS. MARY NOBLE
of Chariton, Iowa, relatives, were present at the funeral.
