The Chariton Leader, Chariton, Iowa
Thursday, May 9, 1907

J.W. SHEPPERD died at the home of his son, Prof. BRUCE SHEPPERD in Des
Moines, on last Thursday. He had been at the home of his daughter in Kansas
and was in a worn physical condition when he arrived at his son's, in fact
they thought then that his journey was almost ended. His remains were
brought to Chariton where funeral services were held on Saturday at the
Christian Church, conducted by Elder D.L. Dunkelberger. His wife died just
six weeks before, so the parting was but brief.

The deceased had been an honored resident of Lucas County for fifty-six
years, the family home being in Whitebreast Township. MR. SHEPPERD was a
native of New York, coming west in an early day and his history is similar
to that of others who braved the rigorous conditions of the times and sought
a competency, through diligence, frugality and toil. He was an exemplary
citizen; his neighbors feel the loss of so excellent a man keenly, for the
world is better that he lived. He had been a life long member of the
Christian Church and performed a Christian's part well. He is survived by
five children.
