The Chariton Leader, Chariton, Iowa
Thursday, December 27, 1906

The death of ALEXANDER STEPHENSON occurred at the residence of his
son-in-law, JOHN F. SHEHAN, of Tyrone, at 12 o'clock noon, Saturday, after
about two weeks' illness. MR. STEPHENSON was stricken with paralysis two
weeks ago and never rallied. While knowing those about him he was unable to
speak.

He was born in Downpatrick, County Down, Ireland in 1822, and was 84 years
old at the time of his death. He was one of the hardy pioneer element who
helped open up the west to civilization. In 1849 he crossed the plains, but
later returned to Iowa, where he purchased a farm in Jackson Township in
this county and he resided thereon up to a few years ago, when he retired
from active work. For a short time after leaving the farm, he and his aged
wife resided in Melrose, but later removed to Tyrone, where they made their
home with their daughter. His wife preceded him to the land beyond a few
years ago.

The funeral was held Sunday from the residence to the cemetery at Greenville
in Lucas County, where he was laid to rest beside the remains of his wife.

-- ALBIA NEWS.

*MRS. STEPHENSON was a sister of WILLIAM IRVIN, of Russell, and an aunt of
WILLIAM BAXTER, of this city.
