J.W. LAYTON was born in Butler County, Ohio, Sept. 18, 1828, and died at his
home in Chariton, Monday evening, Jan. 14, 1907, at the age of 79 years, 3
months and 25 days, after an illness of only a few days with paralysis. At
an early age he, with his parents, moved to Louisa County, this State, where
he resided until grown. Some years before the war, he located in this city
where he has since resided. In 1862 he enlisted as a soldier in Company E,
34 Iowa Inf., but owing to ill health was honorably discharged after a few
months service. He was united in marriage to MISS MARGARET BUFFINGTON in
Louisa County, June 21, 1846. To them were born four children, two of which
died in infancy and one grown son, WILL, who died several years ago. He
leaves a wife and one daughter, ETTA, besides a large circle of friends to
mourn his death.

MR. LAYTON was a quiet, unassuming man, always ready to lend a helping hand
to the needy and had a pleasant word and smile for all with whom he met. He
had complained of not feeling very well for a few days but was able to be
about the home and was uptown occasionally. he was stricken with paralysis
on Sunday morning and remained unconscious until Monday evening at 10:30
when death came as a relief. Funeral services were held at the home in
southwest Chariton, Wednesday, at 2 p.m., conducted by Rev. Nathan Evans,
Pastor of the M.E. Church, and the remains laid to rest in the Chariton
Cemetery.
