Eliza, Niswender nee Kohn

Death of Pioneer Lady

Mrs. Eliza Niswender passed away on Friday, August 10th, 1917 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. A.M. Wheeler, 512 North Grand Street, at the age of 92 years 3 months and 29 days. She had been an active woman and up to a few months ago cared for her own home and was ever ready to lend a helping hand to those less forturnate then she. She had a pleasant and happy disposition and tried to live a life of unselfishness that the world might be better for her having lived.

Eliza Kohn was born in old Virginia, April 12th, 1825, where a part of her early life was spent, later moving to Ohio, where she united in marriage to Abraham Budd on April 13th, 1844. To this union five children were born, three of whom survive, Mrs. A.M. Wheeler, Mrs. Rosetta EnEndree and James Budd. Nancy Eliza and Marilla passed way many years ago.

Mr Budd died May 17th, 1854. She was again married to Samuel Niswender on April 28th, 1855. Two children were born to this union, George H. and Francis D. Niswender, both of this county. She had been member of the Methodist Episcopal Church since she was thirteen years old, and was a consistent christian woman. She, with her family, came to Lucas county in the fall of 1855, locating on a farm about 4 miles northwest of Charition, and later they removed to Oakley where she resided until last year, when she came here to make her home with her children. She had a host of friends who will deplore her demise and who will extend sincere sympathy to the sorrowing children.

Largerly attended funeral services were held from the home Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock conducted by Rev. Jos W. Goodsell, of the First Methodist Episcopal Church, and interment was made in the Chariton cemetery.

All of the Oakley friends who possibly could, attended the funeral of Mrs. Eliza Niswender at the home of her daughter, Mrs. A. M. Wheeler, in Chariton Sunday at 2:30, "Aunt Liza" as everyone fondly called her, was for years a resident here, and was highly regarded by all who came to know her. She lived to the age of 92 years and 3 months, and had led a simple christian life. She was an exceptionally neat housekeeper and was passionately fond of floweres. Her yard was always like a huge bouquet. Many will miss her and many will be the better for having known her, and we all hope to meet her in the Great Beyond.
