DIED-Oct. 8, in her 68th year, of cancer in the mouth, Mrs. Mary Bates, wife of Mr. J.C. Bates, who has been a resident of Lucas county for 21 years.

Mrs. Bates was born in the State of Kentucky and raised in Indiana; coming with her husband from that State to Iowa. For eight years the cancer was slowly coming but kept back by the physician. But about one year ago it took on a malignant form, she having suffered very severly all that time. She has been a consistent member of the Baptist church for upwards of 40 years, and has ever adorned her profession by a meek and queit(sic) life. During all her intense suffering she never mumured and being conscious that death was approaching she was calm and unmoved knowing that to be with her Lord would be far better. She leaves a husband and one daughter and several grandchildren to mourn her loss. An only son she gave for the defense of the Union. He giving his life as many did. while the living mourn her loss yet knowing how severly she suffered and now fully prepared she was to died, can in her case, especially feel that their loss is her eternal gain. The funeral was held Sunday, Oct. 9th, at 2 p.m. at the residence of her son-in-law, Mr. W. C. Brown, being conducted by the pastor of the Baptisit church. A large number were present. She was buried in the Chariton Cemetery.
