Chariton, Iowa

John Nelson Lane was born in Franklin county, Ohio, on January 26, 1851, and passed away at the house of his son, Elmer Lane, in Des Moines, Iowa, on Wednesday, December 13, 1933, after an extended illness, at the age of 76 years, 11 months and 17 days. The body was brought to Chariton and take to the Downs Funeral Home, and on Saturday afternoon at two o'clock funeral services were held at the M. E. church in Lucas, conducted by Rev. Shupe, of Indianola, and burial took place in the Goshen cemetery.

When but six years of age deceased came to Iowa with his parents and spent the remainder of his life in Lucas county. On March 28, 1872, he was united in marriage to Mary Ellen Coleman, who preceded him in death. To their union ten children were born, six of whom are left to mourn their loss. They are Mrs. Elizabeth Leach, of Kansas City, Mo.; Mrs. Pearl Benge, of Van Meter, Iowa; Elmer Lane of Des Moines, Iowa; Charles Lane, of San Pedro, California; Bert Lane, of Lucas; and Floyd Lane, of Runnells. Three sisters and two brothers also survive. They are Mrs. Mary Sydebotham, of Plattsmouth, Nebr.; Mrs. Retta Hutchins and Henry Lane, of Lucas; and Matthew Lane, of Des Moines. There are also thirty-nine grandchildren and forty-three great grandchildren.

Lane, all of Des Moines; Mr. and Mrs. Tom Smith and son and Mrs. Harry Smith, of Ferry; Mrs. Alice Lyman, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Lane and son, Jaems and family, Mr. and Mrs. Roland Lane and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Luke and son, all of Chariton; Mrs. Belle McHale, of Omaha, Nebr.; Mr. and Mrs. Ray Lane, of Newton; Perry Benge and sons, of Vanmeter; Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Lovell, of Hartford; Fred Sydebotham, of Plattsmouth, Nebr.; Mr. and Mrs. Denny Lovell, Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Lovell and Mack Lovell, all of Locoma; Herman Lane of Oskaloosa.
