Chariton Leader or Patriot

September 9, 1909

Chariton, Iowa

Mary Ingram was born in Franklin county, Ohio, February 5, 1828, where she grew to womanhood. She was married to William N. Lane, who was a native of Fayette county, Ohio, February 24, 1850. To them were born ten children, four sons and six daughters, seven of whom, three sons, John and Henry, both living in Lucas, Iowa, and Malachi, of Des Moines, Iowa, and four daughters, Mrs. Mary Sydebotham, of Courtland, Nebraska, Mrs. Hettie Hutchins, of Lucas, Iowa, Mrs. Belle McHale, of Omaha, Nebraska, and Mattie Hutchins, of Hescomsfield, Iowa, are still living and were all at the funeral. Mother Lane was at the time of her death, the mother, grandmother and great-grandmother of even one hundred descendents, the most of whom were present at the funeral.

Bro. and Mister Lane moved to Vermillion county, Illinois, in 1854 and to Lucas county, Iowa, in 1858, where with the exception of two years spent in Washington county, Iowa, they made their home until death.

Mother Lane endured the loneliness of widowhood for ten years, her companion having died in May of 1899.

While she was a woman of a quiet and unobtrusive disposition, she had the kindest of hearts; she was kind and sympathetic and a true friend to every body. She never indulged in harsh and unkind criticisms of any one, and was never known to have an enemy. A friend once said to me, "If there ever was a kinder woman than Mother Lane, it has not been my good fortune to meet her." She was sick about eight months, during which time she suffered severely, but endured it with patience and resignation.

She retained her consciousness to the last moments, and as the end approached expressed her willingness to answer the Master's summons. Shortly before passing away, she said that all was clear and she was ready to go. She closed her eyes calmly and serenely as a ? of a summer evening, and her spirit returned to God who gave it.
What a comfort to the children to whom she was so tenderly devoted to know that the mother whom they loved so dearly is at rest; her labors ended, her sorrows past and she is enjoying the reward of the good and the true. She died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Hutchins, in Lucas, Iowa, August 30, 1909 at the advanced age of 82 years, 6 months and 25 days.

The funeral was held in the M. E. church of Lucas, and she was buried in the Chariton cemetery. A. C. H.
