May 30, 1935 Obit for Mrs. Harriett Scovel
Harriett Grover was born in Scioto county, OH, February 15, 1854, and died
at the home of her daughter, Mrs. C.T. DeLay, in Des Moines, Iowa on May 30,
1935, aged 81 years, 3 months, 15 days.
When 3 years of age, her parents, Leonard and Elizabeth Cumpston Grover,
moved to Iowa, traveling by steamboat and covered wagon, and located in Lucas
county Iowa, where they made their home for a number of years. Her father and
mother both served in the civil war, the mother as nurse to the wounded
soldiers for about two years.
She was married December 25, 1870, to Joseph O. Hamilton, now deceased, of
Warren County, Iowa, where they made their home, and later in Lacona for a
number of years. They were the parents of nine children, four of whom survive,
Mrs. Nellie Fuller, of Creston; Mrs. Ada Rook, Jacksonville, MO; Mrs. Anna
Delay, Des Moines; and Mrs. Lois Tredennick, Derby; also several grandchildren,
great grandchildren, one brother, Geo. G. Grover, of DePere, WI, and a host
of other relatives and friends, who mourn her passing.
Later in life she was married to Judson A. Scovel, of Derby, who passed away
several years ago. A step son, L.W. Scovel, of Derby, also survives.
She bore all the hardships of pioneer life with bravery and fortitude, known
only to women of those early days, and memories of her many friends in and
near Lacona were very dear to her. Her life as a Christian was associated with
the M.E. church of Lacona, also the M.E. church at Chariton, and later in
life with the Presbyterian churches in Derby and Creston. She had a life of
service, patient in all things and always wanting to help others. Her last
thoughts and words were for the welfare of those around her. She had been a
patient suffering for the past few years and was ready and willing to go when the
Master called.
Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon June 1, at 2:30 oclock at the
Lacona M.E. church and she was laid to rest in the Newbern cemetery.
