Obituary for Judson A. Scovel - died December 11, 1915
Judson Alonzo Scovel was born near Springville, New York, March 8th, 1841,
the son of Hezekiah and Diantha Scovel, and died at his home in Derby, on
December 11th, 1915. At the age of seven years Mr. Scovel came with his parents
to Illinois, settling on a farm near Ottawa, where they resided for a few
years, later moving to a farm near Danville, Iowa. The subject of this sketch
enlisted in the 3rd Iowa cavalry at Fairfield, and served four years. He was a
member or McKnight post G.A.R. Mr. Scovel married to Miss Harriett M. Higley
at Danville, Iowa, January 29th, 1868. To this union were born two children,
Luman W. Scovel, of Derby, and Effie B., deceased. Mrs. Scovel died May 25th,
1874, at Danville. On February 14th, 1877, Mr. Scovel was married to Miss
Annie Hitchcock at Danville. The same year they came to Lucas County, settling
on a farm near Derby. They were the parents of one child, Ellen, who died at
eh age of two years. Mrs. Scovel died on February 13th, 1905. September 16th,
1909, he was married to Mrs. Harriett Hamilton. For two years Mr. and Mrs.
Scovel resided at Macon, MO. Four years ago they moved to their farm near
Derby, and in October of this year moved to Derby. In early manhood he united
with the Congregational church, later joining the Derby Presbyterian church of
which he had been an elder for more than twenty years. Mr. Scovel gave
unsparingly of his time and means towards the upbuilding of not only his own church
but for the advancement of Christian work in the community, He is survived by
his wife and son, Luman W. Scovel, and by five foster daughters who had
shared his home and affection: Mrs. F.P. Scovel, of Derby; Mrs. Nellie Fuller, of
Creston; Mrs. Ada Rook, of Oakley; Mrs. Anna DeLay, of Des Moines, and Mrs.
Lois Tredennick, of Lucas. Mr. Scovel was one of a family of seven children.
Two survive him, Mrs. Carrie Curtis, of Chariton and Merrill Scovel, of
Humeston. Funeral services were help at the Presbyterian church on Monday at 1
p.m., conducted by the pastor, Rev. B.F. Pearson. Interment was made in the
Goshen cemetery.
