The many friends throughout the county were saddened by the news of the death of Alonzo Williams which occured at his home on east Court avenue on Friday morning, October 23, 1908 after an illness with bowel trouble and a complication of diseases. Funeral services conducted by Rev. W.S. McCullagh, pastor of the First Presbyterian church were held at his late home on Sunday afternoon at three o'clock and on Monday the remains were taken to his former home near Last Chance for interment.
Alonzo Williams was born in Monongahalia county, West Virginia, near Morgantown on November 17, 1823. He was nine years old when with his father and uncle he came down the Ohio river in a flat boat to Cincinnati, thence to Shelby county, Indiana. He was married there on November 8, 1948 to Miss Rachel E. Glenn. They were the parents of ten children, only two of whom are living. They are Mrs. H.J. Newsome of near Derby and Albert R. Williams of Cody, Wyoming, both of whom were present at the funeral services. Mrs. Williams died on Jun 11, 1870. He was married in February 1873 to Mrs. Rebecca Standhope, of Clarke county , who died the following winter. On September 23, 1899, he was again married to Mrs. Amelia Duntley, who survices him. He leaves besides his wife and two children, two sisters, Mrs. Wm. Ramay of Indianola, Iowa and Mrs. Adeline Graham of Galesburg, Ill. Mr. Williams and family came to Iowa in November 1849 and located in Clarke county near the old Mormon trail. Several years ago he moved to Chariton and this place has since been him home. He had been a member of the M.E. church since early boyhood and had lived a consistent christian life. He was upright in all his dealings and was honored and esteemed by all who knew him. His sudden death is mourned by a host of warm friends who will extend sincere sympathy to the sorrowing relatives.
