Mrs. Anna Hopkins Groves

Relatives and friends here were greatly shocked by the news that Mrs. Anna Hopkins Groves, who had been spending a few months in Jennings Oklahoma, with her brother Lyman Whitten and family, had dropped dead at that place on Monday morning, Nov. 2 1924 at about 6:30 o’clock. The remains were brought to Chariton on Tuesday evening and taken to the home of her son, Elmer Hopkins, and on Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock, largely attended funeral services, conducted by Rev J A Riggs, were held at the First Baptist church, followed by internment in the Chariton Cemetery. The floral tributes were unusually profuse and beautiful, tender messages of love for the dead and sympathy for those who were bereft. The remains were accompanied to Chariton by her brother, Lyman Whitten. Mrs. R L Perry of near Lucas, and Mrs. Sam Linstrom of Lincoln Township, also went to Kansas City to meet them.

Anna Lovina Whitten was born at Waseon, Fulton County, Ohio on October 8, 1856. She came to Birmingham Iowa in 1859, and at the death of her parents in 1860 was brought to Chariton, where she and her brother, Lyman were placed friends and where she grew to young womanhood. She has always resided in or near this city, She was always cheerful, and ever radiating the Christian graces, She adopted Christ as her personal Savior early in life and has been a church member since girlhood. Her highest happiness came in being helpful to others and around her life clusters a great love, unshaken in time and eternity.

She is survived by one brother, L A Whitten of Jennings Oklahoma; and two sons and three daughters, Elmer Hopkins of Chariton, Mrs. Mont Perry and Mrs. S H Linstrom of this county, Mrs. Lloyd H Watson of Ft Collins, Colorado, and Finis J Lynch of Des Moines, and by ten grandchildren and other relatives and a host of friends. To all these sorrowing ones the sympathy of the entire community will be extended. Among those from out of Iowa who attended the last sad rites were L A Whitten of Jennings OK; Mrs. Lloyd Watson of Ft Collins CO; Mr. And Mrs. S Givans and Sam Dickerson of Adingdon IL; Mrs. Laura Shields, of Dudley, IA; Mr. & Mrs. F J Lynch of Des Moines; Mrs. Clara Whitten of Russell, Mr. & Mrs. Bert Hawk and Miss Mary Perry of Kansas City. MO.
