Catherine Lusk - Chariton’s Centenarian Dead - May 1912 - Chariton Herald-Patriot

Chariton’s centenarian, Mrs. Catherine Lusk, departed this life at the home of her son, W. B. E. Lusk, in this city, on Friday morning, May 17, 1912, at 2:30 o’clock. On April 12 of this year she suffered a stroke of paralysis and since that time had been delirious. About two weeks before her death she attempted to get out of bed while the attendant was out of the room, and fell to the floor and broke her hip. Up to the time she was stricken with paralysis she was in good health and was able to be about and enjoyed visiting with her neighbors and friends who would call to see her. Brief funeral services were held at the home of her son on Saturday morning at ten o’clock, conducted by Rev. C. C. Davis, of the Christian church, assisted by Rev. W. G. Hohanshelt of the M. E. Church, and Rev. Hugh F. Moore, of the Baptist church, and at noon the remains were taken to Burlington and interred in the Old Stone Church cemetery near that place by the side of her husband, John Lusk, who died on April 15, 1857.

Catharine Johnston was born in West Virginia on October 18, 1811. She lived there until she was fourteen years of age when she moved with her parents to Greensburg, Indiana, where they located on a farm and where she grew to womanhood. She was married there on August 27, 1837, to John Lusk, of Lexington, Kentucky, who was a soldier of the war of 1812. In 1840 they moved to Burlington, Iowa, this state being a territory at that time. Mrs. Lusk was the mother of four children, three sons and one daughter, only one of whom, W. B. E. Lusk, of Chariton, is now living. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and twenty great grandchildren.

After the death of her other children she came to Chariton in 1896 and has since made her home with her son here. May years ago she was converted and united with the Stone church of
the Baptist denomination in Franklin township, Des Moines county. She was an intelligent, refined woman, and could tell many interesting tales concerning the events of the past century. She celebrated her 100th birthday on October 18th last, and at that time received her friends very informally. At the time of her death she lacked but one day of being 100 years and 7 months old. She was a devoted mother, a kind neighbor, and was liked by all who knew her. She had a large circle of friends who will miss Grandma and who will extend sincere sympathy to the sorrowing son and other relates who survive.
