Jim Burley – Obit – Chariton Leader, Aug 28, 1990

James Lester Burley was born in Wayne County to Silas and Laura Dean Burley May 3, 1888 and passed away at the Chariton Manor Aug. 16, at the age of 102. Jim was a member of the Sharon Church and was baptized in the creek nearby.

He was a life-long resident of Lucas County and a farmer for many years, until he and his family moved to Chariton and he went to work for the Highway Commission. For many years, Jim enjoyed working at the 4-H Fair. He loved gardening and supplied many people with his fresh vegetables.

On Sept 5, 1913, he was united in marriage to Ethel Tuttle and to this union five girls were born: Merna, Leona, Beulah, Ruth and Jessie.

Jim was preceded in death by his wife; two daughters, Leona and Beulah Gartin; his father and mother; his twin brother; seven brothers and four sisters.

Jim is survived by three daughters, Merna Burley, Ruth Callahan and husband Bert of Chariton, and Jessie Burley of Des Moines; one brother, Clarence Burley of Council Bluffs; one grandson, Jim Callahan and wife Margaret of Boone; one granddaughter Connie Banks and husband Don of Whittier, Calif.; two great-grandchildren, Tim Callahan of Boone, and Michael Callahan and wife Terry of Belding, Michigan; and many nephews and nieces.

Jim was a loving and kind person and loved people. He will be missed.

Funeral services were held Aug. 20, at the Mosher Funeral Home with Rev. Hambleton officiating. Serving as bearers were Bert Callahan, Jim Callahan, Tim Callahan, Marvin Hawkins, Johnny Pierce and Tom Swanson.

Interment was in the Chariton Cemetery.
