Hazel A. Nichols – obit – Herald-Patriot April 8, 1899

Hazel A. Nichols, daughter of William and Inez Smith, was born April 20, 1988 on a farm in marion County, Iowa. She passed away March 29, 1999, at the Chariton Nursing and Rehab Center at the age of 100.

Hazel attended country school and Drake University, studying music.

She was united in marriage to David G. Hartley Oct. 28, 1922, and two daughters, Annette and Davadean, were born to this union. Hazel and David farmed until his death in September of 1930. At this time, Hazel and her daughters moved to Chariton were she married John Nichols in January of 1952.

Hazel was a member of the Chariton Christian Church, Disciples of Christ. She was their church organist for many years. Hazel sang for many funerals and weddings and gave music lessons.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, daughter Annette, and her husbands.

Hazel is survived by daughter Davadean Johnston and husband Jim of Chariton; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two step-daughters, Donna Worthy and husband Curtis of Burlington, and Dorothea Prather of Rockford, Ill.; 14 step-grandchildren, and eight step-great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 1, 1999, at the Fielding Funeral Home in Chariton. The Rev. Carla Hillyer officiated. Burial was in the Dallas Cemetery, Jan Weed, Mike Weed, Cody Darrah, Dave Johnston, Jim Johnston and Chuck Williams served as bearers.

Memorials may be made in her name to the Chariton Christian Church, Disciples of Christ.
