The Chariton Leader, Chariton, Iowa
Thursday, April 23, 1908

D.B. MCCAULEY, of Jackson Township, was in the city, Saturday. He recently
returned from a visit to his boyhood home in "Old Virginia," visiting
Richmond, Cumberland Gap and other points, after an absence of twenty-six
years. He says many changes had been made in the face of the landscape
since he left but there was much of the familiar scene remaining. The
primary cause of his visit was the illness of a brother residing there, but
he is now improving and may be restored to health.

There were many incidents of the trip but one thing especially he told us
not to mention, so, of course, we will keep that on the dead. It was the
present of a little brown jug filled with fresh distilled from the worm, no
moonshine about it for the revenue was paid. This will be kept in his wine
cellar as a mascot against malaria. The nectar is as sparkling and pure as
the choicest cheer ever quaffed at the feasts of Bacchus to quicken the
spirit of revelry.

Some day the Leader editor promised Me to come out during the ague season --
and "here's to the health of Old Virginia."
