The Chariton Leader, Chariton, Iowa
Thursday, April 23, 1908

The town of Russell boasts of the oldest painter in the county, in the
person of I.N. WAYLAND, who lives all by himself in a little cottage, on the
north side. Recently he celebrated his 74th birthday by painting a house,
which occupation he has followed for a generation of years. It is not every
man at 74 years who would attempt to climb high ladders on his birthday, but
"NEWT" says some day he expects to surmount the golden ladder and then grow
no older forever.
