The Chariton Leader, Chariton, Iowa
Thursday, January 16, 1908This year's graduating class in the Chariton High School seems to be wasting
much youthful energy debating the matter of dress at graduation. This
complex problem can be solved in a few simple words if they will stop to
enquire which they are trying to adorn, their persons or the minds. This
does not seem to trouble the boys so much as the girls. If the latter are
aiming to make butter-flies out of themselves then the flounces and lace are
all right, we reckon. But if they intend to develop a thorough knowledge of
the practical, caps and gowns, costing but a few dollars, would be as
becoming as silken frocks and frills. There is a great deal of foolishness
about all of these graduation ge-gaws, which some can afford and others
cannot. If there ever was a time to adopt matter-of-fact ways it certainly is on
commencement day. In order that all can appear on an equality let the
simple garb prevail on this occasion and see to it that no one is compelled
to hand back or feel humiliated. Graduation from (*can't read) than a
display of dry goods samples. Sometimes the dummies in the shop windows are
dressed finer than the business lady behind the counter, who has mind,
experience and capability.Let graduation be a show of intellect rather than an occasion for dress
parade.
