The Chariton Leader, Chariton, Iowa
Thursday, January 16, 1908

A number of the high school students demand that their graduation be
celebrated by a high class ball and dance. The ministerial association of
the city have protested against this ball and dance as a High School
function. The board of directors have a right to discard this as a function
of the school but no power to restrain the dance should the young people
desire to engage in it on their own responsibility. This the ministers are
aware of and make no other claim. The board of directors have been waited
on by a committee from the association and their claims presented. They say
that a number of the parents of the graduating young people are opposed to
dancing and it is not right to force an ostricism upon these through this
lack of endorsement; also protest against any of the teachers engaging in
this dance as a High School function, but as individuals were at liberty to
do as they please. The ministerial association disclaims any intent of
interfering with private affairs, but when this is endorsed by the board of
directors it becomes a public affair against which they have a right to
protest.
