The Chariton Leader, Chariton, Iowa
Thursday, January 16, 1908On Monday, GROVER C. FLUKE had reached his 21st birthday. On that date he
became a sovereign citizen of this grand republic in every sense of the word
fully endowed with every franchise of freedom and the inalienable rights of
man. His good wife concluded that this was no unimportant event, so planned
and carried out a plan of surprise to him by inviting a large company of his
friends to (?) rooms in the Kubitchek block. A most sumptuous banquet was
spread, tables well appointed and tastefully decorated with exotics and the
guests seated ready for the feast, at about 9:30. Then the host unawares
was sent for. On arriving on the scene he showed his youthful embarrassment
but in a moment made each one welcome. And then the guests fell to and
devoured the feast to the honor of MR. FLUKE. It was a merry crowd. The
conversation was spirited, and jest and repartee went the round, after which
they all retired to the parlors where another pleasant hour was spent in
games and social chat, and music. As a memento of regard, the company
presented the worthy host and hostess a fine set of silver knives and forks
-- as well as wholesome congratulations for a prosperous and happy future.
