Hi Corinne,
I see your problem. As he has no known grave stone and isn’t listed in the WPA things get more difficult.
In Iowa, deaths began being recorded at the county level in July, 1880.
If he held land, at the time of his death, perhaps a Probate Record could be found at the Louisa Co. Clerk’s Office.
The next problem is with whether a newspaper account of his death could be found. At Keck Library, in Wapello, they have on microfilm the Wapello Republican from Nov. 7, 1878 to May 15, 1880. The next set begins Nov. 17, 1887 and goes to 1888.
My next bright idea was to check to see if an account of his death would be found in the Muscatine, Muscatine Co. newspaper. My access to Newspaper Archives had nothing found on Knight for August, 1880.
So then I went to look at the Federal Censuses.
I found him, as a single man, in the 1850 & 1860 Federal Census as living in Louisa Co.
On the Louisa Co. IAGenWeb site there is a marriage record that he married 22 Sep 1854 to Florilla/Flarilla Dayton in Louisa County.
In the 1870 census, Ancestry had his name spelled as Ada Knight. Looking at the scanned, original image, I clearly see Asa Knight. They were living in Union Township, P.O. Clifton. Enumeration was 6 Jun 1870. Among the family members was Charles Knight, 3 yrs. b. IA.
Using Charles Knight as the search feature, found the household in the 1880 Federal Census, enumerated 11 Jun 1880. They were still in Union Township. Flavilla Knight, age 51 yrs was noted as Widow. Charles Knight was 13 years old. Laura Dayton, age 22 yrs, was still living with her mother.
I sure wish I could just go down to the Louisa Co. Court House and to the Keck Library, but due to the Virus situation, I cannot. Wish it would be sooner vs later but…
Looking forward to hearing your thoughts. It’s okay to email me directly.
