According to the History of Louisa County, Iowa, S.J.Clarke Publishing, 1912, pages 306-307 from a biography of RICHARD COTTER. Depending on the age of the stone in question, could the "S" you refer to have been a J? Richard Cotter was born in Franklin County, NY on 14 April 1844 to William and Mary (BRODERICK) COTTER, natives of County Cork, Ireland. They first located in New York and in 1850 moved to Kankakee, IL. In 1863 they came to Louisa County settling on the farm in Elm Grove township that was occupied by Ricard. There were six children: Margaret, Edward, Richard, Ellen, Julius, and Mary. All were deceased except Richard at the time of publication.
Richard Cotter married JENNIE BLAIR on 27 March 1879, the daughter of W.T. and Sarah (DUNCAN) BLAIR, both born near Loudon, TN and married there on December 9, 1845. Lived in TN until 1847 when they came to Louisa County. They had five children.
Richard & Jennie had eight children: William, Francis, Cleveland, James, Dollie, Edwin, Helen, and Pauline. All were still at home except Francis who had passed away. Mr. Cotter was a communicant of the Roman Catholic Church. Perhaps you could check the parish records for the Catholic churches in Louisa County and that may give you the information you seek.
